‘This one’s for Dad’ – Subratie strikes In father’s memorial

first_imgGARY Subratie pulled off a 4-1 coup with United States-bred SARATOGA SIGHT, landing yesterday’s feature, the Errol ‘Big Sub’ Subratie, run over a mile, honouring his late father’s memory. Subratie, who was moved to tears when he won the inaugural running in 2016 with another American, BLUE DIXIE, prepared SARATOGA SIGHT specifically with his father’s memorial in mind. Racing for the fourth time after debuting locally mid-August, SARATOGA SIGHT, a former New York-based claiming miler, who, in 2016, won once at Aqueduct and was twice second at Belmont, benefitted from conditions, which allowed him to shed 16lb in three races, entering the overnight allowance event with a featherweight 50.0 kilos. After showing glimpses of his ability last time out, racing wide on the home turn, at odds of 18-1, finishing fifth, seven and three-quarter lengths behind fast-as-lightning PATRIARCH at six furlongs, SARATOGA SIGHT landed the gamble in the race that mattered, clocking 1:39.0 for the mile. Breaking smartly from post-position two, the five-year-old American horse showed his class by duelling BRUCE WAYNE down the backstretch. The pair fended off challenges from SIMPLY OUTRAGEOUS and ROYAL VIBES, who attacked three-wide, three-and-a-half furlongs out, but found the two leaders resolute entering the straight. BRUCE WAYNE quickened and poked his head in front a furlong and a half out, seemingly getting the better of SARATOGA SIGHT, but the American rallied strongly against the rail when roused by Dane Dawkins with a half-furlong to run, regaining the lead to win a three-way photo finish by a short head over BIRDIE MY LOVE, who came with a strong last-furlong run in mid-track. ROYAL VIBES finished third, a neck away, with Anthony Thomas, denied a fourth winner on the 10-race card in his bid to put daylight between himself and Panamanian Dick Cardenas in their battle atop the jockeys’ championship. The Thomas-Cardenas showdown started the day with the Panamanian facing a deficit of eight winners, overshadowed new apprentice Christopher Mamdeen’s three-timer as the duelling leaders took their fight down to the final race on the programme. Cardenas, aboard Anthony Nunes 5-2 chance, DIOSA DE ORO, held off a late charge from Thomas astride Gary Griffiths’ NIGHT LIGHT to register his lone winner of the day, cutting his rival’s lead to 10 after falling 11 behind earlier in the afternoon. Cardenas’ victory with DIOSA DE ORO also ignited the trainers’ battle between Nunes and champion Wayne DaCosta, who won back-to-back races with LADY BLUE and WINTER IS COMING, Thomas and Mamdeen respectively, extending his $1.2m lead, before his perennial rival struck in the night pan to remind of his intentions. With 13 racemeets spread between November 3 and December 29, the respective championships – trainers, jockeys and owners – are set for thrilling finishes, beginning this Saturday, the first meet of the new month.last_img read more

I can’t wait to start scoring goals for Sunderland, says Defoe, as he closes in on move

first_img Jermain Defoe 1 Jermain Defoe is confident he still has what it takes to be a prolific Premier League marksman as he closes in on a move to Sunderland. The 32-year-old is heading back to England after an 11-month spell with MLS outfit Toronto, with the former Tottenham man on Wearside to put the finishing touches to a move to the Stadium of Light that will see him swap places with Jozy Altidore. If Defoe completes the switch in time he could even face his old employers Spurs at White Hart Lane the weekend – and he is ready to hit the ground running.“I felt so sharp (during his run through on Wednesday). All that hard work has paid off. I can’t wait to start scoring goals for Sunderland,” he told the Mirror.“Everybody knows how much I love English football and I still feel that I have a lot to offer.“People might look at my age, but I have always looked after myself and I hope I can show that with my performances.”Speculation has increased over Defoe’s future in the last week after he revealed on Twitter that he was back in Britain on January 6.He tweeted: “Just touched down in the UK from south of France, was training with my fitness guy feeling stronger than ever! #Ready.”In the last 48 hours the noises linking Defoe with Sunderland have grown increasingly encouraging, but the deal could still be dependent on Altidore. The 25-year-old United States international had been touted to replace Defoe at Toronto in a straight swap deal, although that move would have to be approved by the MLS, which operates an allocation policy. However, it is a deal which could suit all parties with Defoe returning to the Premier League and Altidore having struggled to live up to the £6.5million fee and reputation with which he arrived from Dutch club AZ Alkmaar during the summer of 2013.Poyet has made no secret of his desire to add firepower to his squad – which has managed just 18 goals in 21 Barclays Premier League games so far this season – during the January transfer window, and Defoe certainly brings that.He has been prolific through his club career, netting 124 Premier League goals during spells at West Ham, Spurs and Portsmouth, and his 55 senior appearances for England have brought him 19 goals.By contrast, Altidore has found the going tough on his return to England’s top-flight, where he spent a season on loan at Hull earlier in his career. His 52 appearances to date have yielded just three goals, and only one of those has come in the league, in a 4-3 home defeat to Chelsea in December 2013.Altidore has found the back of the net only twice this season to date, for his club against MK Dons in the Capital One Cup in September last year, and for his country in a 2-2 draw with Colombia almost two months later.Should the double transfer go through, Sunderland would have to have completed all the paperwork by lunchtime on Friday in order for Defoe to make his debut against Spurs.last_img read more

This decision was taken despite a credible new bidder being made aware to them before Tuesday’s 5pm deadline.Given this, all staff, players and no doubt fans of Bury Football Club are utterly devastated that despite the new bid to buy the Club, the EFL have informed us that they will not be rescinding their decision. This is something we are struggling to comprehend as the new bidder has proven significant funds to the EFL, funds to allow them to takeover, run and secure the long-term future of Bury Football Club. Everyone at the Club believed that such the capabilities of the potential new owner, this would’ve started a brand new era for the Club, seeing it go from strength to strength. The extreme lack of communication from the EFL has left all involved with Bury Football Club astonished and in dismay. As a Club, we are still pursuing other options, based on the outcome of where the EFL place us. Again, we would like to reiterate that the lack of communication from the EFL has been nothing short of dismal throughout this process.Thank you to all the supporters for staying patient with us while we try to provide you with updates as frequently as possible. All of us here at Bury Football Club have been thoroughly overwhelmed with the floods of support we have received from other football clubs, ex-players, fans of other football clubs and everyone else in the industry. Rodgers has done ‘incredible job’ with Deila’s squad

first_img“The amount of work he puts in, the coaches put in, the way the players have developed and the way they are performing, it’s been remarkable really.” Peter Lawwell says Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has done an incredible job with a squad largely made up of players from Ronny Deila’s time at the club. The Parkhead side won their first away fixture in the Champions League on Wednesday when they defeated Anderlecht 3-0 in Belgium. It keeps their hopes of European football after Christmas alive, especially with group opponents Bayern Munich losing 3-0 to Paris Saint-Germain on the same night. While Lawwell was naturally delighted with the result away from home he also praised the way Rodgers has turned the club around since his arrival last summer. “Fantastic performance,” he told STV. “It was a fantastic, mature European performance so we’re delighted. “And it was against a club you can really benchmark and measure yourself against. I think we came out with flying colours.“It’s been remarkable, the majority of the players that appeared for the first team each week and appeared last night were at Celtic with Ronny before Brendan came.”He added: “So he’s done an incredible job, he’s an outstanding manager and outstanding coach, and I’m delighted for him. last_img read more

Champs successfully defend Drak titles

first_img24 January 2011After a day of high drama on a full Umzimkulu River in KwaZulu-Natal, defending champions Hank McGregor and Abby Adie retained their titles in the Global Trader Drak Challenge Canoe Marathon on Sunday, capitalising on mishaps that derailed their challengers.McGregor started the 38 kilometre final stage from Swartberg Road bridge outside Underberg to the Hopewell farm, close to the Coleford Resort, side by side with two former winners of the race, Len Jenkins and Ant Stott. The trio quickly reeled off the first eight kilometres into Underberg before setting off into the notorious Underberg Gorge.Tripped upMcGregor was the first paddler to be tripped up by the feisty river, when his paddle wedged between some rocks and almost flipped him out of his kayak. Against the odds, however, he managed to recover and the front bunch remained intact and shared a laugh about McGregor’s close call. The race was effectively reduced to a two-horse race when six-time champion Stott fell out of his boat at the end of the Underberg Gorge, leaving McGregor and Jenkins to race away on the second half of the stage. Both got through the Lower Gorge unscathed, before McGregor made his break a kilometre-and-a half from the finish.‘I pushed the pace’“I pushed the pace in the last 25 minutes so that Len (Jenkins) didn’t have the jump on me. Messed up in the FastDrak (a race over the same course but run on a single day), and I didn’t want that to happen again,” explained McGregor, who got his nose ahead for the sprint finish to win the race by just two seconds from Jenkins.Stott completed the stage alone to wrap up third almost three minutes behind the leaders.“Today was my day,” said a delighted McGregor. “I was lucky and I am stoked with the win.”Jenkins was generous in defeat, and said he had battled with his fitness so early in the season. “I have also been doing a lot of mountain biking, which has eaten into my paddling training,” he said.Seasoned Gauteng racer Jacques Theron wrapped up fourth place by holding off under-21 star Brandon van der Walt who, despite recovering from a bout of tick bite fever, constantly hounded Theron and his Gauteng ally Piers Cruikshanks.DelightedJust as delighted as the men’s winner McGregor was Howick racer Abby Adie, who retained her title in the women’s division, after starting the final stage nearly a minute behind Robyn Kime. The lead was unchanged when Kime approached her nemisis, “The Mineshaft” chute, down Scotstons Weir on the outskirts of Underberg. It was the same place where she took the second of the swims that scuttled her 2010 title challenge.Once again, she saw her chances of winning the GT Drak disappear in the churning water at the foot of the weir as she took another swim.“Two guys went into the chute ahead of me and I had to slow right down, losing all my speed going into the weir,” said Kime. “I then made a silly mistake. It was a stupid rookie error.”Comfortable victoryAbby Adie, on the other hand, didn’t put a paddle wrong on the tricky river and coasted home to a three-and-a-half minute victory over Kime. “I am thrilled to defend my title and I look forward to trying to make it three in a row next year,” she said.“I was cautious in the rapids once I took the lead,” she continued. “I had done my homework at Glenhaven Rapid, even though my line wasn’t the recommended line, but I backed myself, and it worked.“The other rapids were brilliant. Heaven and Hell Rapid was heaven!”Amanzimtoti surfski ace Michele Eder hung hang onto third place, despite also taking a swim at “The Mineshaft” chute. “I am still nervous of the rocks as I am quite new to river racing. I try to picture them as a foamie in the sea,” said Eder.Adie was touched to be the first recipient of the new Margie Oliver Memorial trophy, which honours the “mother of canoeing” who passed away five weeks ago.RESULTSMENHank McGregor 3:45.01Len Jenkins 3:45.03Ant Stott 3:47.43Jacques Theron (Gau) 3:51.32Brandon van der Walt (U21) 3:52.34WOMENAbby Adie 4:09.40Robyn Kime (WP, U21) 4:13.08Michelle Eder 4:23.14Hilary Jean Pitchford 4:26.36Alex Adie (EC) 4:33.23SAinfo reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? Watch Out, Skype: Mobile Video Calling Startup Tango Heads to Desktop

first_imgThe Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology Tango, a cross-platform mobile video calling startup, is today announcing its first expansion to a non-mobile platform: the Windows desktop. Sometime later this summer, the new PC software will debut, joining Android (phone and tablets) and iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad) as the third major platform launch for the company over the past nine months.Impressive GrowthTango now has over 18 million users in 190 countries using its video calling service. Unlike Apple’s proprietary FaceTime, Tango works over 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi, while FaceTime is Wi-Fi only. And even though Tango’s install base falls far short of Skype’s 170 million monthly connected users, not to mention its 600 million+ registered accounts, it’s growing fast. In fact, it’s growing twice as fast as Skype itself did during its first year, TechCrunch recently noted. Today, Tango adds a million users every two weeks, the company says.We covered Tango barely 6 weeks after its September 2010 launch, when the application had been downloaded over 3 million times by mobile users. At the time, Tango shared that its ambitions were to move onto other platforms, including the desktop, the tablet and the TV. Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement Tango for Mac on the HorizonTango has already conquered one of those three platform (tablets), and has apps for the iPad and Android tablets available now. With the forthcoming launch of the new desktop software, the company is hoping to reach the wider PC market, consisting of 1.5 billion devices worldwide. By this time next year, Tango CEO Uri Raz says there will be 100 million customers using his company’s software. The choice of going Windows-first on the desktop is obvious: sheer numbers. Tango CTO Eric Setton says that PC users comprise 70% of Tango’s user base. But a Mac application isn’t too far away. “We do plan to release on Macs and it’s in our product roadmap,” Setton says, “but we do not have a definitive timeline. It’s an important platform for us and we aim to be everywhere.”$42 Million in Series B, Skype Investors InvolvedClearly Tango is on the fast track, having also just announced it has closed $42 million in its Series B round of funding led by Draper Fisher Jurvetson, notably the first outside investors in Skype, as well as venture capital led by Len Blavatnik and Alex Zubillaga. How Tango is DifferentFor end users, what makes the service different from Skype is a minimalist feature set. You can’t buy credit or dial landlines, there isn’t an IM-like “chat” feature and you can’t accept calls from non-users. In other words, Tango does video chat and just video chat.More importantly, though, it makes the process of doing video chat incredibly simple. There is no “setup” involved and you don’t have to create a username or password to join the service – you just input your phone number. Tango then automatically fills its address book with other Tango users it finds on your phone. A similar process will be offered in the PC version, too.On the back-end, to make that setup process happen quickly, Tango keeps a centralized directory of its users. This is different than Skype, which is based on a peer-to-peer model of communication, where data moves between end users’ devices, not through Skype servers.Tango is an interesting company to watch, somewhat like seeing Skype reborn as a mobile-first outfit. Whether or not Tango can ever reach the same heights as Skype, especially now as a Microsoft property with integrations planned in everything from IM to the Xbox, still remains to be seen. sarah perez What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … Related Posts Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Tags:#mobile#news#NYT#web last_img read more
